The Maasai Mara University has re-opened the institution, three weeks after it was closed indefinitely following riots from the students.

In a memo dated March 13, the students were instructed to report back to school, highlighting different reporting dates for various cohorts.

“This is to inform you that Senate during the meeting held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, resolved that the University be reopened,” the memo signed by the Registrar of Academic Affairs read in part.

The Registrar, however, issued three ultimatums for the students before their admission, including the payment of a Ksh1,000 mandatory penalty for damage caused during the riots.

Further, the students must clear all their school fees arrears and sign a bonding form available on the institution’s website.

“Kindly note that all payments should be made through the Jiunge App by the time of reporting,” the memo states.

“No student will be allowed to enter the school premises if they do not meet the reopening conditions above.”

All first, second and fourth-year students are set to report back on Sunday, March 17 and commence lectures on Monday, March 18, 2024.

Also in the cohort, are all students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme and all students undertaking Diploma and Certificate programmes.

“All third-year students except those pursuing Nursing are required to report back on Friday, April 26 and resume lectures on Monday, April 29, 2024," the memo read in part.

The students in February went on strike, claiming that the institution's administration interfered with the student elections.

According to the students, the administration was enforcing leaders friendly to them, as opposed to those elected by the students. The university's Election Appeals Committee postponed the fifth union elections, which caused the riots.
