On Friday, March 22, the Senate Devolution Committee effectively mediated a protracted dispute between Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and his deputy, Philomena Kapkory.
This achievement followed a three-hour closed-door meeting with both the Governor and his deputy aimed at resolving the conflict.
Addressing the press after the meeting, the Senators remarked on the success of the mediation, highlighting that Natembeya and the Deputy had reached an agreement to collaborate effectively.
"We are impressed with the Governor and his deputy for agreeing to work together to offer effective services to the people of Trans Nzoia," noted Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.
The senators were compelled to visit Trans Nzoia County following a complaint by Kapkory claiming she received death threats.
She further alleged that she had been marginalized and excluded from most county activities despite holding the principal assistant position to the governor.
Additionally, the deputy Governor claimed that certain County Executive Committee Members and county employees disrespected her.
During the intervention, the senators stressed the need for a good working relationship with the county government, saying Trans Nzoia was the breadbasket of the people of Kenya.
Meanwhile, the governor assured his deputy of her safety and welcomed her back to her office. He also said she will now focus her energy towards service delivery to the people.
The deputy governor thanked the senators for visiting the county and urged them to also visit other counties facing similar predicaments.
"I want to plead with the Senate to meet with all Deputy Governors to understand the challenges we are facing," the deputy governor noted.
The Senators also met with the members of the County Assembly to discuss matters of mutual interest.
