Motorists Warned of 90-Day Traffic Disruption Along Mombasa-Malaba Route

Motorists will be affected by another abnormal load transportation which is set to disrupt traffic flow on Kenyan highways for 94 days.

In a notice published in the local dailies, a logistics company is set to undertake the transportation of the abnormal cargo from March 27, 2024, to June 30, 2024.

The affected routes during the period include Mombasa - Mariakani - Voi - Mtito Andei - Emali Machakos Junction via Mai Mahiu Road - Naivasha - Nakuru - Eldoret - Webuye - Malaba route.

Through the notice, motorists were urged to take caution when plying along the route.

"This is to notify all road users and the general public of the abnormal load movement on the following routes. Please exercise extra caution when near the vicinity of this cargo," the notice read in part.

The company noted that the load being transported measures a maximum overall length of 26 metres, width of 4.4 metres, height of 5.5 metres and gross weight of 70,000 Kilograms.

An abnormal load is viewed as cargo that exceeds the legal load or dimensional limit stipulated by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

The current limit is restricted to 12.5 metres for passenger vehicles, while articulated vehicles including semi-trailers should not exceed 17 metres.

A combination of vehicles consisting of either a motor vehicle with a drawbar trailer is granted a maximum length of 22 metres.

At the same time, another logistics company warned users plying along the Mombasa-Nairobi route of traffic disruption for 19 days. 

The abnormal cargo load exercise will commence on April 5, 2024, and end on April 24, 2024.

"All road users on this route are requested to observe extra caution when in the vicinity of this convoy."
