Data from South African tourism authorities reveals that the number of Kenyans who arrived between January and December 2023 increased by 99 per cent compared to a similar period in 2022.

As reported by South African media houses, South Africa recorded more than 42,000 arrivals from Kenya, contributing to the large number of tourists from within the continent who jetted into the country.

According to SA Tourism, the increase can be attributed to the deal between President William Ruto and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa struck in November 2022.

The two Heads of State removed visa requirements for citizens from the two countries allowing Kenyans Visa-free access for 90 days per year.

"Kenyans holding ordinary passports will be allowed to enter South Africa on a visa-free regime of up to 90 days per calendar year,” Ruto announced at the time.

Meanwhile, according to SA Tourism, Kenya tourists spent over 20 per cent more than what they did in 2019.

This influx in tourism has been a boost to the economic and cultural sectors in South Africa. It has created jobs, led to cultural exchange and strengthened international relations.

SA Tourism is currently running a campaign to increase the number of tourists from Kenya. The 'There's So Much More to See' campaign has had a tangible impact due to Kenya's robust social media landscape.

Earlier on, South African Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille noted that the increase was also due to SA’s efforts to showcase itself as a responsible tourism destination and right for green economy-conscious travellers.

“Kenya’s remarkable performance can be attributed to the strategic decision by the government to simplify the Visa regime in 2023 as well as targeted and effective insights-driven marketing campaigns,” de Lille stated.

On the other hand, Kenya removed Visa restrictions to all countries which has seen an increase in the number of tourists flocking the country.

The directive issued by President Ruto took effect in January 2024 which allowed foreigners to enter Kenya without a Visa and only after applying for Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Similarly, relevant authorities have put enough measures to guarantee the safety of Kenya's borders.
