On Sunday, March 31, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers arrested several passengers travelling in a Super Metro bus on Thika Road.
Speaking after the arrest, NTSA stated that the passengers were being detained for boarding a full bus.
This was part of a nationwide crackdown by the Authority which seeks to improve road safety.
“Excess passengers off-loaded and detained. To avoid any inconveniences, do not board an overloaded vehicle,” NTSA stated.
The passengers were immediately loaded into a waiting police vehicle after which, they will answer the charges.
Kenyans in different parts of the country were also detained for flouting various transport laws, rules and regulations.
Still, on Sunday, several motorcycles were detained and a school bus stopped for inspection on the Meru-Nkubu Road.
In Mombasa County, a roadblock was erected at Nyali Bridge to ensure vehicles moving in and out of the island were roadworthy.
Several vehicles were also detained in Nyeri County following road safety compliance checks along the Nairobi-Nyeri Road.
This comes after Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on March 19, reversed former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive ordering NTSA officers off the road.
The directive came after a series of fatal accidents that occurred along major highways, some involving school buses.
CS Murkomen directed that NTSA officers would collaborate with traffic police to maintain road safety.
