Governor Sakaja Reveals Plans to Name Mutuini Hospital After Rachel Ruto

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Thursday, April 4, revealed plans to rename Mutuini Hospital located in Dagoretti South after First Lady Rachel Ruto.

The Governor revealed the looming change while delivering his State of the County address at the Nairobi County Assembly as he discussed the reforms his administration has initiated in hospitals across the Capital.

“The C.E.O of Mutuini Hospital, soon to be renamed Mama Rachel Ruto Hospital, is Dr Wanda," stated Sakaja

However, he did not reveal the date when the name will officially be changed.

He explained that his government had reformed the governance structures of the hospitals.

This is part of the reforms recommended by a taskforce instituted within the first 60 days after he took office.

Sakaja clarified that the taskforce comprised C.E.Os from various reputable organisations to advise the county make better decisions.

Additionally, Sakaja explained that as part of the reforms, his government also reconstituted the boards of all the hospitals in a bid to bring in fresh leadership.

The Governor further explained that the county’s health needs were complex as the hospitals in Nairobi served five countries across the region, necessitating the reforms.

Previous reports had also indicated that the hospital was expected to undergo a facelift before it was renamed.

In more reforms within the medical field, Sakaja explained having installed the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit first of its kind at Mbagathi Hospital Nairobi in 2023.

Further, the county was also confirmed to have operationalised an eye unit within the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
