The National Disaster Operation Centre has issued an alert over the potential spillage of the Seven Forks Dam.

In a letter addressed to select County Commissioners on Tuesday, April 9, the agency noted that the spillage would result from the recent rains that have been witnessed in Mt Kenya, the Aberdares and Nyambene hills.

Therefore, it was noted that the spillage would result in flooding in the counties of Lamu, Tana River and Garissa.

As a matter of urgency, residents living in low areas in the three counties were also advised to move to higher grounds in case the floods commence.

"This is to inform you that Seven Forks Dams are almost spilling over. Heavy rainfall over the past few days in Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares and Nyambene hills has caused water levels to rise rapidly, therefore resulting in potential risks to life and property.

"Immediate actions required include evacuation. Be advised to evacuate to higher and safe grounds, if you reside in low-lying areas or near water bodies," read the advisory in part.

The agency also warned the residents against walking or driving through the floods.

As a matter of caution, residents in the three counties were also encouraged to keep themselves updated by following weather forecasts and alerts issued by the respective government institutions.

On the other hand, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of increased rains in most parts of the country including Nairobi.

According to a forecast issued on April 8, some areas within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County will also experience thunderstorms.

Consequently, Kenyans were advised to dress accordingly and keep warm during the night.

"Rainfall is expected to continue over most parts of the country. Heavy rainfall events are likely to occur in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast, North-western and North-eastern Kenya," read the advisory in part.
