A member of the ISIS terrorist group was on Friday, April 12 found guilty of five counts at the Milimani Law Courts.

The convict, Mohamed Abdi Ali alias Abu Fidaa, alias Abu Shuhadaa, alias Abu Ramzi was charged with being a member of the ISIS terror group and organising a meeting in support of terrorist groups.

Abdi was also convicted of recruiting members to the terrorist group, collection of information, and possession of articles connected with the commission of terrorist acts.

Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act No. 12 of 2011, the Chief Magistrate, Martha Mutuku ruled that the prosecution proved the case against Mohammed Abdi Ali beyond a reasonable doubt.

The prosecution lined up testimonies from 26 witnesses, including the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations(FBI) from the US and Uganda Police.

Led by SPPC Duncan Ondimu, the prosecution recommended a sentence of up to 90 years, citing the seriousness of the offences and the impact they would have had on the country.

Further defending their decision, Ondimu noted that the defenceless nature of the victims, the intelligence of the convict, and the fact that he would have used technology to perpetrate the crimes were reason enough to pass the sentence.

The court has however acquitted two individuals charged with the convict.

Abdi Ali was arrested on April 29, 2016, at his residence in Wote Town within Makueni County.

His co-accused were arrested at the Entebbe International Airport in the Republic of Uganda under investigations that linked them to the intended establishment of an ISIS caliphate in Kenya and East Africa.

Abdi will face his sentencing on April 22, 2024.

The country has registered two alleged terror attacks in the past month. A total of 8 lives were lost.
