Lawyers Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta on Monday, April 15, announced that they would no longer represent former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa in an extortion case.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke Omari revealed that he would no longer handle the case.
"Yes, it is true that is the position going forward," Omari stated adding that he would not make public the reason they decided to withdraw.
Omari further wrote to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations dissociating himself and Ombeta from the extortion case.
"Kindly note that we are no longer acting for the above-named person. Any communication with regards to him should be directed to him or his representatives," the letter read in part.
Echesa has been accused of extorting Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa Ksh250 million, a charge which he has vehemently denied.
The withdrawal comes barely a day after Echesa accused President William Ruto's personal aide Farouk Kibet of instigating his arrest.
While addressing a crowd in Kakamega, Echesa had remarked that it was impossible for Fernandes Barasa to have him arrested without the help of influential figures in government.
"The person who helped Fernandes Barasa to have me arrested is my friend Farouk Kibet whom we campaigned together for President William Ruto," Echesa lamented.
"I want to tell Farouk that he has been given a powerful position by the President and he should not use it to intimidate me."
The former Sports CS was arrested on March 27, on self-abduction and extortion charges.
Omari and Ombeta were able to secure momentary freedom for Echesa who was released from police custody to seek medical attention after he complained of illness.
