Al-Shabaab Suspect Nabbed Ferrying Explosives in Boat

A foreigner believed to be an Al-Shabaab terror suspect was on Wednesday arrested by Kenya's anti-terror police officers in the coastal region.

According to reports, the suspect was caught ferrying chemical substances used to make Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on a boat heading to Lamu.

Regional Police Commander Francis Wanjohi confirmed the arrest and said the suspect may have received training in Somalia and was planning to carry out attacks in Lamu and Malindi.

"We are holding one suspect whom we believe could be part of Al-Shabaab militants who were planning attacks in the coastal town of Lamu. The seized chemicals have been handed over to ballistic experts for analysis," Mr Wanjohi said.

The police said they will need an interpreter to assist them in their interrogations since the suspect spoke neither English nor Swahili.

The court allowed the police to detain him at Malindi Police Station for 30 days until they conclude investigations.

Kenya's security agencies have lately foiled over 50 attacks by Al-Shabaab attacks targeting various parts of the country.
