Anti-Corruption Commission Dealt Blow As All Commissioners Resign

Suspended chairman of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Mumo Matemu resigned Tuesday evening.

Matemu becomes the last EACC commissioner to leave office after the two other commissioners, Irene Keino and Prof Josephine Onsongo quit in April and March respectively.

The embattled chairman who had been at the helm of the anti-graft commission since 2012 tendered his resignation in writing to President Uhuru Kenyatta saying he was leaving office for the sake of a sustained war against corruption.

Keino quit office on April 30 citing the need to spare her family from the anguish of going through a judicial process while Prof Onsongo who resigned in March cited pressure from outsiders.

A tribunal led by retired High Court judge Jonathan Havelock which was ready to begin investigations on the conduct of the commissioners now remains jobless.

In a report on Capital FM Keino had earlier claimed that the EACC commissioners were being forced to leave office unceremoniously to cover up the sensitive Anglo Leasing case and investigations they were finalizing on the infamous Karen land grabbing estimated at Sh8 billion.

Matemu’s exit is now set to cripple the commission, coming just less than two weeks before the expiry of the 60-day deadline on the investigations into the 175 graft suspects in the famous list of shame The Standard reports.
