Nairobi Gubernatorial aspirant Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has been remanded for five days after she was arraigned in court for storming and causing destruction at a polling centre in Nairobi.
Wanjiru appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi where she was charged with malicious damage to property and creating disturbance.
The Magistrate ordered she remains in police custody until May 2nd when she will appear in court to be released on a Sh500,000 bond.
The prosecution submitted that Wanjiru "unlawfully with others not before court damaged ballot papers worth Sh30,000 at City Park Market Jubilee Party polling station".
Wanjiru, however, denied the charges but the prosecution requested that she be detained until the Jubilee nominations are over.
Police officer Shadrack Mbila had urged the court to deny the bishop bail, arguing she is likely to influence the ongoing investigations.
“The accused person who is an influential member of the society is likely to interfere with potential witnesses who are yet to record statements,” Magistrate Andayi heard.
The former Starehe MP spent the night at Parklands Police Station after she was apprehended for storming City Park polling centre and causing disruption.
She is said to have led about 50 rowdy men in storming the centre and destroying voting materials, claiming that there was a mix up in the ballot papers.
Wanjiru is contesting for the Jubilee ticket against Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth.
