Burger King Opens First Outlet in Nairobi

For many Kenyans, President Uhuru Kenyatta is perhaps a son of fortune who has never had to work to sustain his living.

However, many will be surprised to know that the current President once worked as a waiter at the American fast food chain Burger King.

Despite being the second largest fast food chain the world, Burger King opened its first retail outlet in Kenya last week.

The Kenyan outlet at The Hub, Karen adds on to the more than 15,000 shops that the American company operates.

It is quite an interesting coincidence that the company has entered the Kenyan market when one of its former employees is the head of state.

Kenyatta worked for the company in the 1980s during his stint in Massachusetts, USA where he was undertaking his undergraduate studies at the Amherst College.

After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political science and Economics, Kenyatta returned to the country and started working as a cashier at the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Kipande branch.

He later quit and started his own business.

Unlike Burger King that is yet to appreciate its famous employee, KCB has in the past expressed its pride in their former cashier.

During the President’s 55th birthday, they took to social media where they wished him a happy birthday with a fun message, “Uhuru Kenyatta was once a teller at KCB. Happy birthday Mr. President! (As a side note; salimianga watu…tellers hugeuka President (say hi to people...tellers can turn out to be presidents)”
