Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho was on Monday dramatically blocked from accessing an event in his county set to be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In photos shared on social media, Joho and his entourage are seen conversing with the elite recce police officers, who blocked him from crossing over from Nyali into Mombasa island.
The governor was later taken to a police office near Nyali bridge where he was held together with a number of local MPs and supporters.
Speaking to Citizen TV on the matter, Joho stated that the officers had told him that they had instructions to hold his team until the President's function was over, even though they claimed he was not under arrest.
The Mombasa Governor claimed that Kenyatta's team feared that he would use the public function to expose "lies" that the Jubilee team had stated at the Tononoka rally on Sunday.
According to the Daily Nation, officers from the Flying squad and GSU had been stopping every vehicle accessing the Nyali bridge, with the intention of blocking the governor.
Members of President Kenyatta’s entourage who were heading for the event at Mtongwe ferry spent nearly three hours at the traffic jam.
