Former Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu On Friday narrated how she watched her close friend and ex-Kitui Mayor Martha Mwangangi killed during mass protests in Kitui County.
Speaking while recording a statement at Kitui police station after the tragic event, Ngilu, divulged that Martha was picked from the road side by the County truck and crashed to death as she stared.
“She was not even much onto the side of the road. I was the one on the road proper and she was walking on the outside,” Ngilu told Kitui OCPD Muthuri Mwongera.
Ngilu added, “Still, the truck was able to fetch her from the sides, drag her onto the road and crush her.
The former CS, appeared shaken and almost shed tears before her colleagues picked her up and proceeded to Martha's home to condole with the family.
Ms Ngilu, had gone to calm down traders who were protesting the demolition of their kiosks at Kalundu Market before things turned ugly.
Some locals were heard saying that it was a botched assassination attempt on Ngilu. The shelters are said to have been demolished by County officers without notice.
