Chinese Ferrying Ivory Caught Inside Supermarket

Three Chinese nationals were Monday night arrested in Juja town, Kiambu County while allegedly ferrying ivory inside a van.

Police officers acting on intelligence reports are said to have trailed the two men and a lady to Uchumi supermarket and apprehended them while they were shopping.

Upon inspecting the vehicle the suspects were travelling in, officers seized ivory worth Sh200,000.

Appearing before Thika Senior Resident Magistrate Grace Omodho, the foreign nationals denied charges of being in possession of wildlife trophy and dealing in the same.

Two of them pleaded with the court to show leniency due to their poor health and old age, given they were 60 and 61 years old.

They were released on a Sh3 Million bond with a Kenyan surety of the same and were ordered to submit their passports.

A few weeks ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta affirmed the country's fight against poaching after burning 105 tonnes of ivory and rhino horns, in an exercise that was attended by foreign diplomats and international celebrities.
