Anxiety has gripped President Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign team in Nyeri after claims emerged that millions of shillings donated to his campaigns had gone missing.
President Kenyatta was forced to form a special secretariat to mobilize voter registration in Nyeri County which has trailed Jubilee strongholds in the acquisition of new voters.
The secretariat was allegedly given Sh80 Million through donations made by Mt Kenya billionaires who are supportive of the President’s re-election.
However, local leaders have raised concern claiming that the millions donated have not been utilised but have been misused by the secretariat which they claimed has been relaxing in prestigious hotels in the area instead of going to the villages for recruitment.
On Tuesday, the Secretariat, through former Government Spokesman Muthui Kariuki denied reports of misusing the money donated through the Mt Kenya Foundation.
Kariuki claimed that his secretariat had only received Sh6 Million which had been used in actual mobilisation drives across the area.
He also denied that the secretariat had been supporting certain aspirants through donations meant for voter mobilisation.
“This is a lie. I can confirm that nobody has been given money by the secretariat and all the money has gone to the actual recruitment on the ground,” the former Government Spokesman stated.
On Monday, former Chief of Defence Forces Julius Karangi was sent by the President to bring together the various factions together and ensure they improve voter registration.
Among those who have opposed the work of the Secretariat is Othaya MP Mary Wambui who claimed local leaders had been sidelined.
