CORD Opposes IEBC's Decision to Help Conduct Jubilee Nominations

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has vowed to move to court to oppose IEBC's announcement that it would help Jubilee party conduct its nominations.

The Coalition through the head of Secretariat, Norman Magaya, opposed the decision stating that the electoral body had more urgent issues to deal with like preparation for the August 8 General Election and not handling party primaries.

The Coalition noted that it was unacceptable for IEBC to spend public resources to conduct Jubilee's nominations which are set for April.

CORD further argued that the court had already restricted the electoral body from being involved in the party elections adding that the Commission risked ruining its credibility.

“Jubilee has no funds to bankroll its nominations, they want to seek for funds from Treasury for the exercise which is illegal. IEBC has no capacity to conduct party nominations and they risk damaging their credibility should they conduct Jubilee nominations,” stated Magaya.

On Friday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that the commission would help Jubilee conduct its party primaries.

He made the statement after leading a delegation to meet Jubilee leaders at Pangani headquarters in Nairobi to address the challenges facing the electoral body over the voter registration exercise.

However, the IEBC boss was not clear on whether the nominations would be funded by the Commission or by Jubilee.
