County Spends Sh11.3 Milion on Toilet

Vihiga County Government is on the spot for reportedly using Sh11.3 Million from unbudgeted funds to build a toilet for a County-owned radio station.

In addition to the huge sum, the County is said to have spent Sh14.7 Million to erect a perimeter wall around the Radio station.

A recent report by a special committee revealed that the heavy spending had plunged the County into a Sh2.5 Billion debt.

The station, Vihiga FM, was a project sanctioned by Governor Moses Akaranga after he took office in 2013 and became one of the seven projects implemented during the 2014/2015 financial year, at a total cost of Sh79.3 Million.

Vihiga FM, which does not have any staff, is yet to start transmission despite a transmission studio, a mounted mast and a board of directors being set up one year ago.

“Due budgetary process is a prerequisite before project implementation to ensure there is no loss of funds, no misappropriation. This also prevents the haphazard commitment of government resources without authorisation,” Nation quotes the report.

Other projects included Sh13.5 Million dining hall at Kaimosi Friends University College, rehabilitation of a road at Sh3 Million and installation of WIFI and internet services at the Mbale-based medical training college at a cost of Sh1.7 Million .
