Court Orders Arrest of Nkaissery for Destroying Ship

The Mombasa High Court on Friday ordered the arrest and prosecution of Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery for the destruction of crucial exhibit without court orders.

Chief magistrate Julius Nang'ea, directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prosecute Nkaissery and four government officials for the destruction of a yacht used to traffic heroin estimated to be over Sh20 million.

"This is a serious case and ship was an exhibit that was in the custody of the court but it was blown up," Nang'ea said on Friday.

In August 2015, Nkaissery oversaw the destruction of the Sh28 Million yatch in the Indian Ocean which had been intercepted in April after confirmation by security officers that it contained narcotics.

Five crew members were arrested before police divulged that the suspects were part of an international drug-trafficking syndicate.

Although the owner of the said yacht remained anonymous, the lawyer had threatened to sue the state after sinking the ship in the Indian ocean without following the law.
