Cursing Ritual Conducted on Meru 'Sugar Mummy'

A 50-year-old woman was a subject of a cursing ritual in Kiamuthanga village, Meru County after being accused of sleeping with young boys of the village.

Women who claimed to be mothers of the boys stormed her home singing traditional curse songs to condemn her behaviour before forcefully taking her to the ritual grounds.

Ms Karegi Thiura was fined 8 sufurias of food, five of Rice and three of soup.

The young men in the community expressed their disgrace by attempting to lynch and beat her before she narrowly escaped.

She was accused of stripping naked when drunk so as to lure the youth to her bed.

“She has been threatening that she has spread a disease to our children and announcing pubicly the names of those she has had sex with,” said one resident.

Thiura was banned from talking to any other woman in the village, if found the woman would be fined too.

Monicah Mutunyi, a resident, stated that Thiura would only be accepted back into the community after a cleansing ceremony is done which involved feasting on the eight sufurias of food.

The accused however strongly defended herself saying that young men had been taking advantage of her when she was intoxicated.

She further alleged that she was actually raped by five men the previous week.

The matter is under investigation by the village elders who are expected to make a conclusion on the accusations.
