Doctors Explain How These 100 Nairobi Men Underwent Surgery Compared to Castration

More than 100 Kenyan men on Thursday and Friday turned up at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi to undergo a surgery for birth control.

The men presented themselves for a vasectomy on a day when the world was marking the international day for the operation.

What was surprising is that even tens of youth appeared for the surgery despite the procedure being irreversible until the lapse of 10 years.

The procedure, which was being offered free of charge, was termed as one of the best and most effective methods of birth control with the surgery taking a period of about 30 minutes.

Organisers of the event dismissed speculations that the procedure was equal to castration, adding that such fears were sparked due to lack of knowledge.

“The major hurdle we face is lack of knowledge about vasectomy. The little information that people have about vasectomy is what makes them equate the procedure to castration, but those who are able to get the right information are open-minded about it,” stated one of the organisers.

They further sought to allay fears of any extreme side effects of the operation assuring that the only problem could be bleeding or an infection which can be controlled.

Vasectomy is a medical operation that involves cutting the tubes through which a man's sperm pass through. It's meant to prevent pregnancy and is considered one of the best methods of birth control.
