Doctors to Lose Jobs If They Do not End Strike By Wednesday, Gov't Warns

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu and the Council of Governors (CoG) have given striking doctors up to Wednesday to return to work failure to which they will face the sack.

Meru Governor Peter Munya, who is the CoG Chairman, noted that disciplinary action would be taken against those who do not report to work.

"We have made a decision; those who don't resume work will face disciplinary action from Wednesday this week. They will get show-cause letters by the respective counties. The counties will have no option but to implement the employment regulations and dismiss them," Munya said.

The Council together with the Ministry told the medical practitioners that the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) could not be implemented as it was urging them to accept the offer already set on the table.

Mr Mailu divulged that "No CBA can see the light of the day without recognizing the role of counties who employ nearly 80 percent of the Kenyan doctors."

The medics were cautioned that those who fail to adhere to the direction will have their positions advertised vacant to the public.

"County Government will then be free to advertise and recruit other doctors for the vacant positions to provide services to the citizens,” the Governors mentioned.

The officials further indicated that "County Public Service had been instructed to apply the relevant processes to commence the dismissal process and to recover monies that may have been paid to any doctors that have not been working."

In response, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) stated: "Dear Kenyans, It's unfortunate that the county governments solution to ending this 36 days strike is by firing doctors. Highly regrettable."
