Doctors in Nakuru and Meru Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Five days after issuing a strike notice, doctors in some counties have downed their tools to demand the full implementation of the Return to Work Formula that ended the 100-day strike in March.

In Nakuru, the medics downed their tools on Friday demanding full pay for the last four months including the period they were on strike with patients at Nakuru level 5 hospital being turned away from the facility.

South Rift region doctors Union official Dr. Devji Atella stated that the medical practitioners would not resume duty until they receive their full dues.

In Meru county, patients endured a tough day as medics embarked on a go slow blaming the county government for dragging its feet in implementing the deal signed with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).

Led by the Upper Eastern KMPDU Secretary General Mark Ndung'u, they claimed that they had been victimised and were yet to be paid contrary to the signed agreement.

A doctors' union official from Nairobi revealed to Kenyans.co.ke that they are likely to join the industrial action if the government fails to address the issues they have raised.

Nyeri nurses have already withdrawn their services complaining of poor working conditions and failure by the county government to hire or issue promotions leaving them overworked and lacking motivation.

The treasury claims it has already released money to pay the doctors while governors through the Council of Governors chair Peter Munya insists that counties have not received funds to implement the deal.

Doctors from across the nation are likely to join the strike having issued a strike notice on 1 May through the KMPDU Secretary General Ouma Oluga.
