Dominion Farms Ltd CEO Calvin Burgess Fails to Honour Summon By Parliamentary Committee, Flies to US

Fresh details have emerged indicating that Dominion Farms Ltd CEO Calvin Burgess, who claimed ODM leader Raila Odinga had threatened him, has disappeared from Kenya.

Mr Burgess had been ordered to appear before the House Committee on Thursday by Speaker Justin Muturi to prove allegations that Odinga had been trying to extort money from him.

However, he failed to appear forcing Lands Committee Chairman Alex Mwiru to call off the meeting after waiting for more than one and a half hours.

Later in the day, details emerged that Burgess was planning to dispose of his firm’s assets due to the controversy that it had sparked when he made the allegations.

The US embassy also wrote to the committee stating that Burgess would not appear before Parliament since he was an American Citizen, adding that he was currently in the US and that they were not aware when he would be back in the country.

“Calvin is a citizen of US and resides in the USA. We do not currently have knowledge of his itinerary,” part of the mail from the embassy read.

About a month ago, Mr Burgess, whose farm is the largest agricultural investment in the Nyanza region, claimed Odinga his family members and political associates had been trying to extort money from him after he declined to fund ODM campaigns.

On February 9, he wrote a letter to the Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, demanding for security.

Considering Odinga's high political status and the position he is seeking to occupy - the Presidency - the weight of the allegations made by Burgess could be disastrous to his reputation if things are not cleared up.
