Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has dismissed CORD leader Raila Odinga's allegation that his office was shielding the real culprits involved in the graft cases at the National Youth Service.
On Tuesday, Odinga said in a statement that the latest move to prosecute Planning Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti and NYS Director General Nelson Githinji, was a cover up and a consipracy against the law and the taxpayers.
However, in a press release on Wednesday, Tobiko responded that the prosecution of PS Mangiti and the NYS Boss was not biased or politically manipulated, as claimed by Odinga in his statement.
Tobiko rubbished Odinga's allegations stating that they were 'completely baseless and unwarranted'. The DPP further warned politicians against dragging his office into political drama.
“Politicians should not drag our legal processes into parochial political theatrics that only serve to defeat justice,” his statement read in part.
Tobiko went ahead to defend his office citing that its decisions were based on evidence and the law of the land.
He assured Kenyans that his office would remain focused and execute its Constitution mandate without fear or favour.
The exchange between the two comes after a massive Sh791 Million scandal was unveiled at the NYS department. Since then, pressure from the Opposition and other quarters to have Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru resign, have been mounting and has further been fueled by the recent alleged procurement malpractices also reported in her Ministry.
Following the decision by the DDP, Mr Odinga now says that the Government is fooling Kenyans by using the accused as scapegoats while protecting CS Waiguru.
