Education CS Fred Matiang'i Extends Contract of Moi University Acting VC Laban Ayiro by 3 Months

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Friday announced that he had extended the contract of Professor Laban Ayiro to continue acting as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Moi University.

Prof Ayiro's term as the acting VC of Moi University was supposed to end in December after his 3-month appointment which begun on September 19.

"Prof Ayiro will act for a period of three months until a substantive VC is appointed," Matiangi said during his appointment.

Ayiro took over from Professor Richard Mibey who had been the Vice Chancellor since 2006 until his term ended in September 2016.

However, his appointment was not received well by residents and leaders from the Rift Valley region.

Uasin Gishu's Jackson Mandago and Alex Tolgos of Elgeyo Marakwet led a section of area MPs in protests claiming that they would not accept Ayiro as the VC.

The leaders had been purporting that Ayiro's appointment was biased and instead wanted Prof Isaac Kosgey appointed saying that he had topped the interviews.

The Education CS could, however, hear none of that and maintained he would not allow education matters to be politicised.
