Embakasi West MP George Theuri Narrates Life of His Childhood Friend Anwar Mwok Who Joined Al Shabaab

A Jubilee MP has revealed new details about the suicide bomber who led the Al Shabaab in staging a deadly attack on a KDF camp in Kulbiyow, Somalia.

Embakasi West MP George Theuri has stated that Anwar Yogan Mwok, born Kennedy Mwok, was his childhood friend as they grew up together in Umoja estate.

Mwok was born in Siaya County before his mother relocated to the city.

"I have his pictures in our family photo album. We were very good friends," the MP recalled, adding that the Mwoks lived in a modest extension in Umoja.

After completing his primary school, the young man joined Theuri at Ofafa Jericho Secondary School where he explored his love for football.

At one time, Mwok was enlisted at the Mathare Youth Sports Association programme and even accorded an opportunity to travel to Norway, under the youth football talent development programme.

Theuri stated that Mwok would later venture in the business of selling imported wares which he would fetch from Eastleigh – adding that that may have been the time the young man was radicalised.

He later switched to the construction business with most of his clients coming from Eastleigh which was transitioning from a suburb to a commercial hub.

Mwok soon became a Muslim and later led a break-away radical faction in setting up a mosque in Umoja 1 estate.

"He had so much money that even I as an elected councillor considered becoming a Muslim," stated the first-time MP who was then representing Umoja 1 Ward between 2007 and 2013.

Despite his success and growing influence, Mwok’s teachings were becoming a cause for concern among the greater Muslim community.

At one time, Theuri recalled that he was called by a Muslim police administrator to intervene, adding that his friend later went missing before it was discovered he had gone to war in Somalia.

Police have since reported that Mwok’s businesses continued to be used to raise money for terror activities through the support of his mother who is now a fugitive.
