Eric Kiraithe Remarks on Government Funding Corruption Land Him in Trouble

Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe on Wednesday night found himself in a tight spot following his remarks indicating that the Government was funding corruption in the country.

During an interview with NTV journalist Larry Madowo, Mr Kiraithe was asked by a striking doctor in the audience whether the Government had allocated money to support corruption since it had refused to finance their 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

His first part of the answer was what landed him in trouble when he said: "of course the Government has a huge budget on corruption going to.."

Kiraithe was cut short before he was able to finish his statement with the audience applauding that at least he had admitted the vice was being propagated by the Government.

The edited clip of Kiraithe seemingly nodding to corruption was shared widely on social media with Kenyans sharply condemning the Government.

However, during the interview, Kiraithe was taken out of context as his full answer implied that the Government was funding the various bodies involved in fighting corruption.

"Based on corruption, of course, the Government has a huge budget on corruption going to the Director of Public Prosecution and it is going to the jails where you must go when you are corrupt," Kiraithe said.

In a disclaimer, he warned the audience against politicizing the matter.
