Former television presenter Louis Otieno was about to be dumped by Careen Chepchumba when the latter was found dead in her apartment, an inquest was told on Tuesday.
A close friend of Chepchumba's family disclosed that the two were actually in a romantic relationship and that Otieno used to sneak into Ms Chepchumba's apartment after bribing guards.
“She had come to borrow money when she opened up to me on what she was going through. She informed me that she was in relationship with one Louis Otieno, a famous person,” Mr Paul Ng’ang’a recollected.
Mr Ng'ang'a further divulged that Ms Chepchumba had approached him asking for money and confided in him that Otieno was stressing her with money demands.
According to Ng'ang'a, the young lady who worked as an Engineer at Kenya Power was murdered a day after a family meeting resolved that she returns to her parents home and sell her household items to settle her debts.
"She also requested to be assisted to end her relationship with Louis,” he added.
Chepchumba's father had earlier claimed that his daughter borrowed heavily to finance the former journalist's lifestyle.
Otieno, however, refuted the claims last week before Kibera Law Courts and instead, alleged that Ms Chepchumba was sexually abused by her father, Mr Hosea Kili, and that the mother knew about it.
The former news anchor, who denied involvement in the 26-year-old's murder which happened four years ago, said the deceased confided in him that Mr Kili was not her biological father and used to beat her.
