Explosive Hits Class 3 Girl

A 10-year old girl has lost part of her fingers after they were burnt by what police suspect to have been an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Speaking from her hospital bed at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referal Hospital in Kisumu, Vivian Atieno said that she was playing with her friends at a dumpsite when she picked the device.

"It was a tin that had a wick. I even told my friends that was my tin lamp. I went to light it in the house,” Atieno was quoted by the Standard.

Immediately after lighting the 'lamp', the class three pupil noticed that it was producing a lot of smoke. She then dashed outside and threw the device into a stagnant water where it went off causing damage to her hand.

It is reported that a neighbour who took her to hospital responded upon hearing Atieno scream and found her bleeding profusely in the right hand.

Confirming the incident, Kisumu OCPD Christopher Mshimba said that they had taken the remnants of the explosive to bomb experts who will ascertain what exactly disabled the little girl.

He further advised parents to monitor their children as they could innocently pick anything from dustbins and dumpsites that could harm them.
