Fake Police Commissioner Joshua Waiganjo Finally Sentenced

A Naivasha Court on Wednesday sentenced Joshua Waiganjo to five years in Prison after he was found guilty of impersonating an Assistant Commissioner of police.

Mr Waiganjo, who still maintained his innocence, will also spend one year in jail for wearing police uniform, and six months each for three other charges of being in possession of government property.

The ruling by Senior magistrate Shadrack Mwinzi stated that the sentences would run concurrently.

Mr Waiganjo's lawyer requested for the court's leniency, arguing that the defendant was already serving a two-year sentence for another case.

Senior Magistrate Mwinzi, however, claimed that the accused did not give enough proof that he was a police officer and that he “failed to defend his decision to wear police uniform.”

Mr Waiganjo was acquitted of two counts of robbery with violence after the complainants failed to testify in court.

The accused was arrested on March 9, 2010 by the flying squad and other detectives while attending a burial in Karatina, Nyeri County after claims that he had been impersonating a police officer for over 10 years emerged.

The accused rose in ranks over the years, having led the transport team of Former Vice President Kijana Wamalwa's burial in 2003 and serving as the head of Kenya Police Reservists in Rift Valley among other duties before he was caught.
