Favours Ex-Governor's Wife Wanted from Bank Boss

Reports have emerged that former Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor, Prof Njuguna Ndung'u's wife contributed to the collapse of the Imperial Bank by seeking outrageous favours through the bank's (Imperial) boss.

In an affidavit filed in court to stop the CBK from liquidating the crippled bank, the ex-Governor's wife, Mrs Nancy Ndung'u is mentioned to have obtained money from the bank to pay for her expenses in luxury hotels in Thailand.

Mrs Ndung'u had allegedly used her relationship with the deceased bank's boss, Mr Abdulmalek Janmohamed, to use depositors money for her extravagant lifestyles contributing to the huge shrink of depositors money.

The bank's shareholders have filed the affidavit to stop the regulator from liquidating the bank, pointing out that CBK played a role in crippling the bank during the previous governor's tenure.

“Please inform Mr Janmohamed that we shall be staying at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel from 21st to 24th. The organisers of the conference have kindly agreed to drive us to the resort,” Mrs Ndung’u wrote to Mr Janmohamed’s long-serving secretary, Anne Mboya, on August 03, 2011, as quoted by the Business Daily.

Mrs Ndungu, however, is claimed to have extended her stay at the hotel for an additional five days with an unknown guest after the conference; all which was reportedly paid by Mr Janmohamed.

Together with her associates, Mrs Ndungu is also alleged to have checked in at the Chiva-Som International Health Resort located several kilometres from Bangkok in Thailand. Chiva-Som is one of the top leisure resorts in the world, offering spas and physical fitness training.

Imperial was closed in October last year after the death of Mr Janmohamed, following a discovery by CBK that a chain of malpractices had rocked the financial institution for over 13 years.
