Former MP Peter Kenneth Turned Down Infrastructure Development Cabinet Position to Face Sonko

Former Gatanga Member of Parliament Peter Kenneth reportedly turned down a Cabinet position offered to him by President Uhuru Kenyatta to step down for Senator Mike Sonko.

According to sources privy to the deal, Kenneth met President Kenyatta’s handlers at State House, Nairobi, last Tuesday and was offered the Infrastructure Development docket.

Kenneth, however, declined the proposal to take charge of the post and insisted that if he was to ever step down for Sonko, he would only settle for the Finance docket.

He reportedly stuck to his guns over the matter and insisted that he was better off facing Sonko on the ballot for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

The behind-the-scenes activities aimed at breaking the stalemate between the two, according to the star, resulted in Nairobi politicians allied to Kenneth meeting at State House and resolving to back Sonko.

Senator Sonko won the hotly contested Nairobi Jubilee nominations against Kenneth after garnering 138,185 votes against Kenneth’s 62,504.

Kenneth, however, lodged an appeal against Sonko's win for the Nairobi governor race, saying the nominations were a sham.

He claimed that Jubilee's Nairobi primaries had been rigged in favour of Sonko and were not free and fair.

Sonko will face the incumbent Governor of Nairobi, Evans Kidero , who is contesting under the opposition’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and independent candidate, Miguna Miguna.
