Garissa University Employee Took Photos of Dead Students

An employee of Garissa University was busted taking photos of students who had been killed during the April 2015 al shabaab attack at the institution, the court heard on Wednesday.

Sahal Hussein, a security guard, is said to have been at the premises a day after the gruesome attack, yet orders had been issued restricting any civilian from accessing the campus.

Hussein was arraigned in court where officer Geoffrey Busolo of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), revealed that they captured him red-handed and when questioned, he was not able to explain why he was taking pictures of the dead students.

"He could not account for his actions at the crime scene, which had been secured by officers from various units," Busolo posed.

"We sought to establish from the accused why he was taking the photographs yet there was an order restraining anybody from taking any," the officer added.

Hussein is charged alongside four others with attacking the University and being members of the al shabaab militia group.

In the same court proceeding, it was heard that one of the suspects was found hiding under the bed in the students' hostels.

“The  accused did not respond when we introduced ourselves as police officers. We kept on calling if there was anybody who was nervous to come out and be rescued, He first said he was a student after I pulled him out, but later said that he was visiting a friend, whom he could not identify on further probing. He also could not tell us what subject he was studying at the university,” Mr Busolo told the court.

The Garissa University terror attack was the worst in the country claiming the lives of 147 students and one police officer.
