Girl with Brain Injuries Dies After Doctor's Mistake

Mama Lucy Hospital is yet again on the spot after a 4-year-old girl died two days after a clean bill of health was guaranteed by a doctor at the facility, despite the child suffering head injuries.

Jane Angel, who was hit by a motorbike, slept and failed to wake up after leaving the Hospital, where doctors prescribed painkillers assuring that the child would be fine.

Angel's mother, Dinah Ouko, narrated that after performing an x-ray on her daughter, the doctor dismissed them with a bottle of brufen.

“An x-ray was done and then they told me my daughter was fine and she would be okay in just one week. I was only given brufen, that is just a painkiller,” Ms Ouko told NTV.

It was only after the disgruntled mother sought for a postmortem at a fee, when she found out that her daughter had suffered a head injury that resulted into internal bleeding.

“Later after my daughter’s death I had to pay Sh8,000 for the postmortem to be done and that is when they told me that my daughter had brain injury,” she said.

According to Dr Sam Njiru, a neurosurgeon at Kenyatta National Hospital, accident patients ought to be admitted and examined carefully after having a CT scan, which is mandatory.

“Whenever you get a person who has had some sort of dangerous mechanism of injury they ought to have a CT scan at the very least. Even after the scan, we recommend patient admission because the patients can develop convulsions,” Dr. Njiru said.

Ms Ouko now wants authorities to probe the death of her child, accusing police of undermining the course of justice after allegedly releasing the culprit.

Mama Lucy Hospital is already facing a probe on the death of a 3-year-old meningitis patient, who awaited an ambulace for 5 hours after being referred to Kenyatta National Hospital.
