The National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA) on Wednesday announced that all illegal speed bumps will be removed from all roads in the country and proper signage put up in a month's time.
Speaking during a public forum, NTSA Director Francis Meja, divulged that this would help prevent road accidents and ensure drivers spot the signals from a distance.
The directive comes barely a month after the Naivasha road accident that claimed 43 lives including 11 General Service Unit (GSU) officers who were on their way to Nairobi from Bomet where they had gone on presidential duties.
During the Jamhuri Day Celebrations, President Uhuru Kenyatta blamed Government officials for erecting bumps without proper road signals.
“Erecting bumps where people can’t see without adequate signage should stop. You must admit that was a mistake.
“If you want to erect speed bumps you must make them visible, not just wake up one day and put speed bumps where people can’t see,” Kenyatta affirmed.
The Head of State urged NTSA officials to erect bumps with proper road signs to ensure they were visible to drivers.
The Naivasha tragedy occurred after a Uganda-bound truck that was carrying inflammable chemicals hit a speed bump, lost control and rammed into 13 vehicles causing it burst into flames along the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway.
