Government Sponsors 3-Day Shopping Spree for Designer Clothes at KICC Nairobi

Nairobi residents are set to enjoy a 3-day government sponsored shopping spree at the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC) starting Wednesday.

The initiative dubbed #BuyKenyaSuperSale will give Kenyans an opportunity to purchase designer wear from labels such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria's Secret from as low as Sh50 with the most expensive clothing item going for Sh600.

The sale has been organised by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives as an avenue to promote the local textile industry.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, through State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu, endorsed the initiative noting that it was a prime opportunity for Kenyans to acquire brand new clothing made by the Export Processing Zones (EPZ) for foreign markets.

"They [EPZ] are making them available to this market so that Kenyans can have a sense and feel of what is being produced here and being worn in major cities in the world, but which by the time Kenyans see it again has already been worn in other markets and comes back under the used clothes category," he observed, during his address on Sunday.

According to the ministry, the EPZ is a major driver of Kenya's economy with a total of about Sh74 Billion in investments and having employed over 50,000 people and looking to employ 100,000 more.

The Ministry indicated that the sale is the first of more that will take place in cities and towns countrywide.

Mr Esipisu lauded the initiative as a show of the priority President Uhuru Kenyatta has assigned to the industry.
