Grace Kaindi Fights Back, Sues Government

The immediate former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Grace Kaindi, has moved to court over her controversial removal from office.

Kaindi on Tuesday filed a suit against the National Police Service Commission and the Attorney-General over the manner in which she was ejected from office.

She argued that the decision to have her out of the Deputy IG office, was never put on paper, amounting to a roadside declaration against the law.

"I assumed office in 2013 and was given a five year contract that is to end in 2018," Kaindi said in a sworn affidavit.

She claimed that a Deputy Inspector-General cannot be fired without following due process, adding that the directive should be suspended.

The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett and the GSU Commandant Joel Kitili on Thursday, September 3, stormed Vigilance House in a bid to compel Kaindi to leave office.

Ms Kaindi reportedly did not leave but instead insisted on being given a dismissal or sacking letter before vacating the office.

There has been uproar from the Opposition as well as sections of the civil society who have termed Kaindi's dismissal as unconstitutional.

Others have raised concern that President Uhuru Kenyatta should have instead appointed another woman to replace her.

The President issued a directive replacing Kaindi with Joel Kitili, the former General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant, who has since taken up the Deputy IG position in an acting capacity.
