Health Services in Nakuru Paralyzed

Hundreds of doctors and other medical staff in Nakuru County have gone on strike, bringing services in public hospitals and healthcare centres to a complete standstill.

An estimated 2,400 health workers have failed to show up to work from yesterday, leaving patients stranded.

The workers have decried delayed salaries, with some claiming that they have not been paid for the last four months, while others protested alleged corruption and bureaucracy in the county.

They further complained that trainee doctors are being underpaid while some medical staff had worked for up to 10 years without promotion.

Prior to the strike, the doctors had issued a seven-day notice of strike, as announced on July 31.

Claiming that the county government had refused to address the issues raised, the doctors went ahead and made good their threat.

The effects of the strike continue to be felt by residents, as hospitals have been left almost empty, with the few medics left being too overwhelmed to handle the large number of patients.

Most of the patients have had to go to private hospitals while those who cannot afford the cost, have been forced to go home, waiting and hoping that the strike ends soon.

Meanwhile, the health workers in the area have bowed not to resume duty, until their grievances are addressed.
