How Aspirants are Being Shortchanged by ODM In Acquiring Nomination Certificates

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is in trouble after an exposé revealed that Senior officials in the party were demanding cash for the issuance of nomination certificates.

A story aired by Citizen TV indicated that winners in the just concluded ODM nominations had been forced to part with huge sums of money to secure their tickets.

The exposé showed aggrieved aspirants storming ODM headquarters on Monday evening claiming that the party was issuing certificates to the highest bidders and not the real nomination winners.

Phannys Akosa, an aspirant for Member of County Assembly (MCA) Mukuru Kwa Reuben Ward, explained how she won the elections only for the certificate to be awarded to her rival who emerged position seven in the contest.

“I am tired, I have used all my resources to campaign, only to realize that my certificate had been issued to the person who was number seven in the nominations. I want to urge Raila Amolo Odinga, wherever you are, hear the cries of women,”  she stated

Mr Jairo Atenya (MCA), aspirant for Embakassi North Ward, on his part claimed that  Embakasi South Member of Parliament Irshad Sumra asked for a Sh1 Million bribe in exchange for a nomination certificate.

“ Mr Sumra called me and told me that I get him Sh1 Million so that I can be given the certificate,” Atenya narrated.

Nairobi ODM branch Chairperson George Aladwa, while responding to the claims, stated that the individuals who had been issued with the nomination certificates had not won the primaries.

Following the confirmation by Mr Aladwa, the disgruntled aspirants demanded that the ODM National Elections Board comes clear on the allegations that it was issuing certificates to the highest bidders and explain what was really happening.

The ODM elections board is, however, yet to issue any statement confirming or denying the allegations.
