I Will Not Vie for Laikipia Gubernatorial Seat in August polls - CS Mwangi Kiunjuri Says

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has announced that he will not be seeking any elective post during the August 8 Election after President Uhuru Kenyatta urged him to remain in the Cabinet.

Speaking during a public forum on Wednesday, Mr Kiunjuri affirmed that he will remain in the Jubilee administration as requested by the Head of State.

The CS was set to resign from his post and seek an elective post before the President rejected his resignation.

Speaking in Nanyuki town, Laikipia on Saturday evening during a Voter Registration drive, Kenyatta asked the locals to allow him to have Kiunjuri for the next five years.

The Head of State asked Kiunjuri to remain in government and play the role of ‘political defence’.

“Allow me to have Mr Kiunjuri in government for the next five years. He is among my strong political protectors while crisscrossing the country. I will release him in 2022,” said President Kenyatta in an apparent expression that Jubilee would win the 2017 elections.

Mr Kiunjuri was to battle for the Laikipia top seat with incumbent Joshua Irungu, deputy governor Gitonga Kabugi, former Industrialisation assistant Minister Nderitu Muriithi and former Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Mwangi Thuita among others.
