IEBC Conducting Register Clean Up Over Fake ID Claims

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has made a rather surprising confession on CORD leader Raila Odinga's claims regarding the voter register.

Through a statement issued by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, the Commission confirmed the existence of some 'suspicious' ID card numbers which Odinga claimed were not real and belonged to non-existent voters.

According to IEBC, some of the numbers mentioned by the Opposition leader were subject to an ongoing register clean up.

“We wish to confirm that some of the numbers highlighted by the CORD leader are indeed part of the 128,926 ID numbers that are subject to the ongoing cleanup process,” the statement read in part  .

On Wednesday, the former Prime Minister alleged that there were voters who had registered using single and double digit numbers, different to a real ID which normally has eight figures.

The polls body, however, explained that this was caused by Kenyans whose card numbers have many zeros thus appear as single digits in the database.

“The Commission is aware that there are Kenyans who have ID number reading; 00000002 and 00000023. These may appear as single digit 2 or double digits 23 respectively,” stated Chebukati.

IEBC further stated that some of the numbers which Odinga referred to had been keyed into the database during the 2012 registration drive and were not related to the ongoing exercise.

The body assured that the cleanup was in good hands, maintaining that there should not be any cause for alarm due to the allegations.

The Commission further promised to publish 78,752 IDs that were being shared by Friday this week.

The former Premier had claimed that the electoral body's system was being doctored with the assistance of a senior government official and a former Cabinet Secretary to allow for fake ID holders to be enlisted.
