IEBC Directs All Political Parties to Respect Election Laws

The newly sworn in Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has put Jubilee, CORD and all other political parties on notice as the August 8 General Election approaches.

The Commission on Thursday directed all political parties to adhere to and respect the code of conduct and the election laws that regulate how they solicit for votes.

Through Chairman Wafula Chebukati, IEBC further warned politicians against making inflammatory statements that might divide the country as political temperatures heat up.

“Let us have peaceful campaigns. Let’s not incite people to do things that are not good,” directed Chebukati.

Speaking during a meeting with the Speaker of the Senate Ekwee Ethuro and his National Assembly counterpart Justin Muturi, the commissioners assured that they would collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure politicians abide by the set regulations.

At the same time, IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba asked Parliament to assist the commission in getting the right electoral laws and enough funds to help deliver a credible election.

The Commission assured the country that the results it would announce after the polls would be a true reflection of the will of the people.

The newly sworn-in team is expected to move with speed to finalise preparations for the August 8 polls that have been hampered mainly by court petitions.
