IEBC Explains Why NASA Will Not Be on August Election Ballot Paper

The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revealed that the recently launched National Super Alliance (NASA) logo, will not be on the ballot paper come August.

According to IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, the recently launched NASA logo will not appear on the ballot paper to represent Raila Odinga and his running mate, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Chebukati indicated that NASA will instead use Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) logo of an orange, as its symbol since he is the flag-bearer.

He stated that though the Odinga and Musyoka will be representing the new outfit, they will appear on the ballot paper under their respective parties - ODM and Wiper - but not as NASA.

This was reiterated by the Registrar of Political Parties, Lucy Ndung’u, who explained that the Elections Act provides for parties to form coalitions but only single entities can appear on the ballot paper.

The ODM boss was last week named NASA presidential candidate with Musyoka as his deputy at an event attended by thousands of supporters at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

Under the NASA arrangement which brings together three other principals, ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi is proposed to take up the position of Premier Cabinet Secretary, while Moses Wetang'ula (Ford Kenya) will be deputy Premier Cabinet Secretary in charge of Public Service.

The other principal, Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto of Chama Cha Mashinani, will be deputy Premier Cabinet Secretary in charge of the State Department of Devolution and Planning if NASA takes over the government after the General Election.
