IEBC Withdraws 200 BVR Kits From NYS

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday stated that it has withdrawn 200 voter registration kits distributed to the National Youth Service (NYS).

The move came days after National Super Alliance co-principals led by Raila Odinga announced that the government was using NYS personnel to conduct illegal registration of voters.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebulati noted that the kits were taken back in a bid to ensure that the public confidence was restored in the Commission. He added that IEBC also wants to assure the public of a free and fair General Election.

"Following consultations between the agency and the Ministry of Public and Youth Affairs, today the commission is receiving 196 out of 200 biometric voter registration kits that had been transferred to the Ministry of Devolution and Planning on September 2, 2014, for purposes of registration of civil servants," Chebukati mentioned.

Four of the 200 BVR kits are still at Gigiri Police Station under investigation.

In February, there was uproar after NYS youth were allegedly found registering voters in Runda estate. The suspects were arrested and taken to the Runda police station.

The NASA team has more than once claimed that the NYS personnel were being used by Jubilee in a plot to rig the August 8 elections.
