Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet has warned of dangerous gangs re-vitalizing themselves ahead of the 2017 General Election.
In a statement he released on Friday, Boinnet revealed that the police had information that outlawed sects such as Mungiki and Sungu Sungu were being resurrected.
“I wish to reiterate once again that the proscribed criminal groups such as Mungiki and Sungu Sungu among others still remain proscribed. However, we have noted that there are some individuals making efforts to resuscitate these groups as we approach the electioneering period,” read the statement in part.
Mungiki, which was formed in Central Kenya, had initially been subdued following shoot to kill order by former Security Minister, the late John Michuki. On the other hand, Sungu Sungu which is based in Kisii region was accused of a series of brutal killings with both groups being linked to politicians.
Boinnet also divulged on the Al Shabaab threat, saying that the terrorist group was still planning attacks on Kenya, picking on defenseless individuals and military installations.
He asked for cooperation from the public in helping track four terror suspects who had allegedly orchestrated the Mandera bus attack and a separate one in a quarry.
