Joho Barred From Withdrawing Money in Bank Accounts to Allow Tax Assessment

Officers investigating alleged tax evasion by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Thursday revealed intriguing details that led to the freezing of his bank accounts.

One of the detectives disclosed that it was discovered the Governor had been filing nil returns despite having an income.

Mr Justus Kiuvu, the investigator, added that the Governor had also failed to declare his tax in some years and last filed his returns in 2013.

He noted that Joho had been earning money that was not being taxed, a point that was supported by the fact that he owned two high-end vehicles, a Porsche Cayenne and a Rolls Royce.

“Despite declaring nil tax, he is the registered owner of two high-end motor vehicles - Rolls Royce KBR 001R and Porsche Cayenne KCG 001J,” stated Kiuvu in an affidavit.

He further indicated that Joho's last tax records were for the years 2008-2013 adding that in 2010, he only returned Sh1,000.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) had filed an urgent application for the freezing of his bank accounts to allow tax assessment following the discovery.

High Court judge Hedwig Ong’udi, therefore, barred the Governor from withdrawing or transferring Sh37 Million in his six accounts until KRA completes the process.
