Journalist Beaten After 'Police Dismissal for Blocking Uhuru' Report

Newspaper Photojournalist for the Star Elkana Jacob, who reported on a story in which two police officers were sacked after allegedly blocking President Uhuru Kenyatta's motorcade, was on Tuesday arrested in Mombasa.

It is reported that Jacob was on duty when police nabbed him while crossing the Likoni channel following commands from the Makupa Police station.

The journalist said that he was roughed up by the officers and his camera confisticated while at the Likoni Police Station.

Mr Jacob highlighted that he feared for his life owing to the manner in which he was treated yet he cooperated with the officers.

He linked the mistreatment to his previous article where he reported that the two fired police officers would move to court to challenge their sacking.

The police, however, indicated that they had apprehended Jacob for taking photos at a restricted area in Makupa.

"They are alleging that I was at Makupa taking photos in an area where photography is not allowed," Jacob was quoted by the Star.

The dismissed officers, Corporal Barnaba Rutto and police Constable Joel Atuti, have since cited that they were going to challenge the decision.

However, President Kenyatta while addressing the 2016 Inspector General’s Conference noted that he personally saw the officers taking bribes.
