Politicians affiliated with President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee party have warned of serious consequences if the party uses the newly unveiled smart cards during the April primaries.
Aspirants including Nyeri Woman representative, Rahab Wachira, expressed fears that the cards were only meant to benefit incumbent and wealthy candidates.
Ms Wachira stated that Jubilee ought to use the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) register as it was credible and more inclusive. She added that aspirants unable to buy the cards could get a raw deal.
"The unique cards method is not for the poor or aspirants who have no money. The more cards a politician buys the higher the chances of him getting the Jubilee Party ticket, "she said.
Ms Wachira added : "There is a possibility of aspirants in other parties to sponsor a weak candidate in Jubilee. They will buy the cards and dish them out to party members to ensure the unpopular candidates gets a Jubilee ticket ahead of general election."
At the same time, Tetu parliamentary aspirant Martin Luther Wachira highlighted that unfair primaries would result to low voter turnout in the August 8 Election which would painfully cos Jubilee.
"More parties should be allowed to participate in the General Election so that they all mobilise their supporters and thus lead to a high turnout," Luther noted.
Also commenting on the issue, Nyeri Senator aspirant Wambugu Nyamu firmly stated that he does not trust that the smart cards would lead to a credible election.
Mr Nyamu recounted The National Alliance (TNA) primaries in 2013 which were to be conducted using the card but later canceled due distrusts.
The Jubilee membership cards, which costs Sh20 each, were launched by President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto in last month.
